Genus of palms that includes P. canariensis, that can grow up to 20 m, with 5-6 m long leaves composed by 200 pairs of bright green leaflet and flowers joined in hanging racemes 1 m long. It includes also the Date palm (P. dactylifera), whose leaves are shorter and less dense, and the trunk is thinner. Some varieties withstands maritime exposure, some can be cultivated indoors, but all of them produces fruits only in their original habitat.
